Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Pixel Projection

What is Pixel Projection?

Pixel Projection takes your uploaded images and turns them into beautiful pixel art. Our detailed approach preserves significant features in your image while downscaling, creating a retro-style aesthetic that maintains the essence of your original image.

How does it work?

Simply put, we intelligently group pixels together based on image features and then select the optimal color for each group. You will see a vast improvement over basic downsampling methods.

Want the technical details?

Pixel Projection employs a novel pixel art generation method that goes beyond simple downsampling. We analyze your uploaded image to find areas where there are large changes in pixel colors—this is called an edge map. Next, we draw a grid of squares over your image, then repeatedly move the corners of the squares so the sides align with the edge map. Finally, we choose the optimal color for each grid cell, and voila—beautiful pixel art!

Will my uploaded images ever leave my computer?

No. All processing happens entirely in your browser—your images never touch our servers.

Who is Pixel Projection for?

Whether you're an indie game developer or just someone who loves creative visuals, Pixel Projection is for you! Game developers use it for fast prototyping and visualizing ideas. Everyday users love transforming their camera roll, creating unique profile pictures, or even giving blurry photos new life as pixel art!

Can I download my pixel art?

Absolutely! Once your pixel art is generated, you can download it as a PNG file in various resolutions, perfect for using in your projects, sharing on social media, or printing.

Who owns my pixel art?

You do! We claim no intellectual property rights over any pixel art you create. Just make sure you have the rights to upload and transform the original images you use.
