What do we mean by "dot" pixel art?

The most common form of pixel art uses square shaped pixels where every pixel edge lies directly on top of the neighboring pixel's edge. See the example of "square" pixels in the image below. In contrast to this, we can create "dot" pixel art where each pixel becomes a circle instead of a square. The circles touch neighboring circles, but there is open space in between. See the example of "circular" pixels in the second image below.

Both styles are valid and have their place, but there are times when someone might prefer the "dot" style. For example, certain crafts rely on placing circular shapes that are a better fit for circular pixels. Additionally, the visible background created by the open space can be used to create interesting visual effects. Try the same image twice, first with a black background, then with a white. Notice how it changes the look and feel of the result.
